Per Kirkeby (1938-2018) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Per Kirkeby. Per was instrumental in our decision to found Galleri Bo Bjerggaard back in 1999. It was at his encouragement that we began the journey that has been filled with so many great art experiences and so many informative and captivating moments. All in all, our partnership with Kirkeby produced 12 exhibitions, 8 artist’s books and 7 regular books on his work.Per was an artist of colossal knowledge who constantly enriched our work. Our many conversations – on everything from societal conditions to art matters and more personal issues – have been enormously important to our work as gallerists.Per was one of a kind. Early in his career, he decided to take a different path than most of his Danish colleagues, which quickly put him in touch with the international art scene. Teaching as a professor in Germany and joining the circle around Galerie Michael Werner, Per established himself as an important contemporary artist. His closest colleagues were artists like Baselitz, Immendorff, Polke and Lüpertz.Per was a fighter. He never knuckled under to illness but was always on the road with his work. He enjoyed the love and support of his children, Charlotte, Rebekka, Sophus and Absalon, and his partner, Mari Anne, who stood by him loyally over the last 18 years of his life.Per leaves behind a huge gap that will be impossible to fill and a vast body of work that occupies a central position in Danish art over the last century. In the gallery, we are remembering Per with a modest memorial installation of his characteristic blackboards throughout the hallways. On 25 August, we will be opening Hommage à Per Kirkeby, an exhibition that will take up the entire gallery and showcase the many facets and media in which Per expressed himself over his long life as an artist. We are proud to honour his memory. Morten, Britt and Bo
